Veteran Churn Dash Block Drive from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

It is hard to believe that March is almost here.  That means it is time to get started on the next Compassion Quilt block drive!

We are going to repeat some blocks we did last year.  I had a lot of fun making the quilts and I think many of you enjoyed making the blocks.  For the next three months, we will be making these blocks for our Veterans - so the color scheme will be red, white and blue.

Rather than write a whole new post, I am just going to cut and paste the instructions from last year ...

Log Cabin Finish #9 and More from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

The donation quilt pipeline is full of a big variety of quilts.
I just post them as I finish them!

I do try to put the quilts made from our current block drive to the top of the pile.  This pretty purple one is quilt #9.  I didn't have a lot of purple blocks with all white, so I used what I had and added a wide purple border.  I have had this purple fabric in my stash for a long time.

On the back is this amazing purple speckled white print that Cindy sent in.  I wish it ...

Wednesday Finishes from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

I have been bouncing around finishing the bindings on a huge array of quilts. Some of them have been quilted for a while but I sew the bindings on as I need them.

I am still trying to work my way through all the happy blocks I received in the last block drive. This is happy quilt # 60.  All of the blocks in this top have kind of a rainbow theme.
There is a whole lot of color in this one!

I decided to use a "Boston commons” type layout for this one. Nann had sent me a bunch of ...

Log Cabin Finish #8 from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

The rain didn't let up today and I didn't have the help of a quilt holder so I will only be sharing one finish today.

I decided to play around with big circles for today's quilt.  I was able to group alike colors in each circle of blocks.  I think this quilt is a lot of fun.

On the back is a lovely paisley wide back fabric that was actually sent in by a bunch of different quilters.  This particular piece came from Cindy.

This quilt measures 55 x 66".

I had to lay this one out ...

A Couple More Finishes from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

I was busy again working on client quilts this week but thanks to little elves, I still have two quilts to share today.

Pretty quilts do not need to be difficult.  Sometimes simple patterns make some really nice quilts.  This quilt top sent in by Karen is just made from 5" squares.

I sent this one off for Terry to quilt.  She has a new longarm and these compassion quilts are perfect for her to practice on as she gets used to her machine.

Karen also sent in this lovely backing.  It is a lovely floral that I have not ...

Log Cabin Finishes # 6 & 7 from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

Time to share a few more Log Cabin quilts made from the current block drive.

Holly not only made these blocks but she sewed them all together to make this lovely quilt top.  I really love this circle design.

Holly also sent in the top blue portion of the backing.  All I had to do with add the bottom piece which has been languishing in the stash.  I am very happy it found a good home.

This lovely quilt measures 66" square and is quilt #6.

The top for quilt #7 was sewn together by Liz.  It is purple so ...

Happy Scrappy from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

We have some Happy and some Scrappy finishes today.

First, there is Happy Quilt #59. This little quilt is all about zoo animals. I also used only yellow, orange, blue and green blocks for this one.

I picked these colors to match the adorable jungle fabric sent in by Helen.  There wasn't a lot of it but I had a light brown solid that matched beautifully.

This little quilt measure 40 x 48".

This next quilt is my scrappy Two Bits quilt.  I started with some 9-patches that were in my spare parts box.  Then I made the blocks ...

A Bit of Everything from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

Today, I have a little bit of everything to share with you.

Let's go biggest to smallest quilt.

Here is the 5th Log Cabin quilt made from all green blocks.  I always find it interesting how blocks arrive.  First came a lot of blue.  Then it seemed every package contained green blocks.  Lately all of the blocks have been mostly purple.

On the back, I used a rich leaf print sent in by Beth

This quilt measures 66" square.

This next quilt was sent in by Karen for me to quilt.  I am in love with this pattern.  Looks ...

A Veteran Quilt Finish from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

I just have one quilt to share with you today. I had a few more finished but I just didn’t have the time today to get them photographed.

I needed one more Veteran quilt for a hospital delivery next week. We finally delivered all the ones made during the last Veteran Block drive. For a quick finish, I grabbed a charm pack that Karen sent and added some sashing and some 9 patches from some donated solid fabric.  I really liked how this one turned out.

I don’t usually add borders, but I felt this quilt needed one ...

Log Cabin Quilts #3 and #4 from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

I am starting to see more log cabin blocks arriving in the mail.  Once I open the packages, I stack them into their appropriate color stack.  Once I have enough blocks in a stack, I make a top.  This drive is so much easier than the Happy Blocks drive!

For quilt #3, I grabbed the stack of multicolored blocks with low volume backgrounds (not all white).

I decided to go with a diagonal layout for this one.

I love purple so any time I can add it to a quilt, I am going to.  Karen donated this lovely purple backing ...

A Bit of This and That from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

Lots of Compassion Quilts quilted over the holiday are still crossing the finish line.

Here are a few more!

I was able to make two string quilts with all the string blocks that were donated.
Here is the second one.

The package of wool batting I used in this quilt was donated by Lois.  I have been saving it for a quilt I knew would be heavy.  Wool batting is so light feeling.

I have been waiting a long time to use this plaid fabric - I had about 4 yards so I knew t would work on the colorful string ...

The First Log Cabin Quilt from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

A new Compassion Quilt block drive is now up and running!

With the holidays, blocks have been a bit slow to come in but I am finally able to start finishing up some quilts.

Here it is...Log Cabin Quilt #1.

All I had to do was quilt this one.  Cheryl actually sent in the top all finished.  I love her layout choice.  It is hard to see but a lot of the print have a beach or water theme.

When I was looking for a backing fabric.  I thought this big strip was kind of fun.  It reminded me ...

Happy Block Drive Round Up from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

Even though I am not even close to sewing together all the Happy Blocks into quilts, I think I am ready to write up a summary.  I have organized all the blocks into stacks so I am going to guestimate how many quilts I will be making.

We will still keep track as I finish them to see how close I come.

The first Happy Quilt was shared on September 22nd.  Since then, I have shared 57 completed quilts.  I still have 8 in the pipeline that have been started but not finished.  That means there are 65 quilts essentially ...

Six More Compassion Quilt Finishes from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

It was a really busy week for Compassion Quilts.  Log Cabin blocks are starting to arrive and I have started to plan some fun layouts to sew up.  I received some quilts back from a local quilter who helped me out with some longarm quilting.  And I also got back some quilts that had their bindings sewn on.  Things are always hustling around here!

First up is this adorable quilt that Cheryl sent in.  The fabrics all have a beach theme to them.  With fun fabrics like these, simple patchwork is all you need!

Love her straight-line quilting on this ...

More Misc Finishes from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

I have a few more miscellaneous compassion quilt finishes to share today.  Over the holidays I got busy and quilted up a number of quilt tops - I am finally finishing the binding on a few.

Someone sent me in a huge stack of colorful string blocks.  I was able to sort them into two quilt tops.  Here is the first finish I made with them.  I know this quilt will bring a much-deserved smile to someone's lips.  It is so lovely!

This dotted wide backing was donated by a few people.  This piece came from Margaret.

Friday Finishes from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

No quilt holder today - So I had to quickly snap these photos on the lawn because it was raining.

This quilt is all about cats. I not only received lots of cat blocks but I was also sent a bunch of cat yardage.  There are many more cat quilts to come!

I decided to use some of the cat yardage I received from Lynnette for some vertical sashing on this quilt.  I used the same fabric for the binding.

I received this cat backing fabric from Dorothy.  It was the perfect size for this quilt.

Happy Quilt #53 measures 54 ...

Miscellaneous Finishes from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

Today, I have a few more Compassion Quilt finishes to share with you.

I am still working on getting all the flannel and fleece quilts completed so they can get delivered.  Winter will be over soon.

My friend Janet held up quilts again for me.  She is now obsessed with coming up with fun footwear for the photos.

This little quilt was made from more of the pre-cut flannel squares sent in by Wendy. It is going to take me a long time to work through all of these.

I only make a top if I have a flannel backing ...

A Whole Lot of Happy from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

I knew I received a HUGE number of Happy Blocks but I was shocked when I added them up today.

I will still write up a round-up post but there were over 3K blocks donated!  No wonder there are still so many stacks of blocks on every surface in my house.

Happy Quilt #48 is filled with all sorts of fruits and veggie blocks.

Any gardener will love this quilt.  Look at the backing with all those lovely garden beds.  I have been hoarding these prints for at least a decade and decided it was finally time they go!

This ...

Scrappy String Finishes from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

I haven't been that busy with client quilts lately, so I have been working really hard quilting up the tops that were previously sent in by some generous followers.

Check out this lovely string quilt top Pamela sent in.  I love string quilts and this one does not disappoint.  This quilt measures 60 x 72".

String quilts can get really heavy so I used some of the lighter weight batting that was donated by the hospital.

Pamela not only sent in the quilt top, but she included this lovely red backing and the blue prepared binding.

A scrappy string ...

Happy Fall? from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

The fall season has long since passed but I still have a fall themed happy quilt to share.

I had some great fall colored backing pieces so I decided to gather up some fall themed blocks to go with it.  There are apples, pumpkins, fall leaves, mushrooms - all sorts of things you might see in the fall.  It was fun to see what I could find to include.

This Happy Quilt #47 measures 48" x 64".

Beth sent in these autumn-colored backings.  The scarecrows looked great with these fall leaves.  I also had a rust colored binding ready to go ...
